Available 8.30am-9.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-7.30pm on Sundays

If you have had unprotected sex or you think the condom split during sex, then you may need emergency contraception. Emergency Hormonal Contraception (more commonly known as the ‘Morning After Pill’ or 'plan B') is available free of charge via an NHS funded service at Wicker Pharmacy.

It can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex – however, the earlier the better.

Please note that the pharmacist will have a confidential discussion with you. In the discussion, the pharmacist will assess the suitability of emergency contraception for you and can advise you on the risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as well as providing information about what to do in the long term, such as considering options for ongoing contraception. No appointment needed,  but be aware there may be a short wait.

Here's everything you need to know about the Wicker Clinic contraception service

1. What contraception services do you offer at your Sheffield pharmacy?

We provide the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, offering oral contraception (the pill) and emergency contraception (morning-after pill). All consultations are confidential and free of charge.

2. Who can access the NHS contraception service at your pharmacy?

Anyone can access this service, even if you are not registered with a GP. You can self-refer or be signposted by your GP or sexual health clinic.

3. Is the contraception service free?

Yes. This is an NHS-funded service, so both oral contraception and emergency contraception are provided free of charge.

4. Can I start the contraceptive pill at your pharmacy?

Yes. We can initiate oral contraception for first-time users and provide ongoing supplies after a consultation with our pharmacist. This takes some time so it is best to book an appointment.

5. Do I need an appointment for emergency contraception?

No appointment is needed for emergency contraception. Visit our pharmacy as soon as possible after unprotected sex for the best effectiveness.

6. How soon should I take emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception works best when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Pills can be taken up to 72 hours (Levonelle) or 120 hours (ellaOne) after sex. However they work best the faster you take them,  so please visit our pharmacy as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

7. Will my GP be informed if I use this service?

With your consent, we can inform your GP. If you prefer not to share this information, the service can still proceed confidentially.

8. Do you offer contraception advice?

Yes. Our pharmacists provide personalized contraception advice, including pill options, missed pill guidance, and emergency contraception information.
